Internet is, where it is today because of open standards. Without a standard, open and widely accepted markup (html) it wouldn't be possible to create content discovery systems like search engines.

But there are limitations of the current state of technology which simply put is something like this - for computer programs its hard to figure out how various information elements on a website relate to each other. For example, for a search engine crawling loconomy.com, it will be difficult to co-relate that an address/map location, catalog, pictures, deals are all linked to the same business.

Since we (and our partner businesses) put considerable amount of effort in getting this information online, we would like to see it best represented on rest of the internet.

To solve this problem, we are building the loconomy content syndication platform. As part of this platform we will export our data set in more structured and intelligent formats to some of our partner websites.

How will it work?
Example: If you are a company that publishes local deals, then you can partner with us and get access to our deals data updated periodically and re-publish the data for your site's visitors. Of course we would require appropriate attribution.
Same would work for all other types of data on our site.

Inviting all Businesses in Bangalore

“Hey Ananth, do you have any idea where I can find a good dentist around this area? Since I’m new to this place, I have no clue whom to ask.”

This was a question from a friend of mine who had just returned from the US, planning to put up his base in Namma Bengaluru. As you would expect, the comparisons began.

“In the US, you don’t have to ask anyone for these things. Everything is available on internet, which is a great medium to rely upon”, he moaned (or gloated?).That was my cue – I didn’t skip a beat and told him about loconomy.com (with a great deal of pride, of course). A simple search with the words “dentist” and “koramangala” threw up at over 10 results. He was astonished to see that it was not just a dentist’s address that he could find, but also the timings, specialty, treatments, recommendations and much more, not to mention that he could actually see the photos. “Wow!” he marveled. “So how does this stuff work?”

As I explained how the “stuff” works, I couldn’t help recalling that it’s been quite a bumpy ride filled with lot of fun and excitement so far. As a matter of fact, we are one of the first, if not the first, portal to create a platform for the businesses and users to interact, share and transact online.

He was blown away when I told him that he could do all this on his mobile as well.

Time: Past midnight.
Location: A clean well lighted place (somewhere around MG Road, Bangalore).
Few friends started a discussion over (if i remember correctly caffeine & wine) about internet penetration and lack of local content online. The discussion ended (after a few hours, cups of coffee and glasses of wine) with a decision to start a company that would help bootstrap local content.

Loconomy silently went live. The word was sent out to a bunch of close friends to try it out, and we were more than thrilled with the responses we got.
In the world of "launch early" and "let the users decide", we consciously decided otherwise. We just couldn't release something that we ourselves did not feel thrilled about. Given the pretty high bar we set for ourselves, it took a lot of night outs (trust me) before we could let it out.

Every startup (specially in India) faces one big challenge - finding talent. But we couldn't be luckier, few friends who saw the cool things we were doing couldn't resist and jumped in with all the force. Team Loco, as we call it, is something even the biggest companies would be envious of.
